Regulated vs unregulated
A regulated supply maintains constant output voltage regardless of load current. Unregulated supplies sag under load — fine for charging, problematic for sensitive circuits. Always buy regulated for bench work.
What is load regulation?
Load regulation is the percentage change in output voltage from no-load to full-load. A 0.01% figure means a 30V supply stays within 3mV across its full current range. Good bench supplies are <0.05%.
Programmable or manual?
Programmable supplies expose SCPI or Modbus control over USB/RS-232/WiFi. Useful for automated testing and repeatable setups. Manual supplies suffice for most hobbyist one-off bench work.
