True RMS vs average-responding meters

Average-responding meters read correctly only on pure sine waves. True RMS meters measure the actual power content of any waveform — critical for switch-mode supplies, VFDs, and any non-sinusoidal load.

CAT safety ratings explained

CAT II covers household circuits. CAT III covers distribution panels and industrial equipment. CAT IV covers utility connections. Buy at least CAT III for any work in an equipment cabinet.

Count resolution: 4000 vs 6000 vs 20000

Count resolution determines how finely the meter resolves values. 6000 counts on a 200V range resolves to 0.033V. 20000 counts resolves to 0.01V. Most bench work is fine at 6000; precision measurements need more.
